Paving the SolarPunk Path of E-Waste Reuse
Organic Fiction
by

The workshop met on Saturdays in the back of the ReLeaf depot on Springdale, at a long table under a row of fluorescent tubes that buzzed in E flat, and it was taught by a woman named Graciela Fuentes, who had spent twenty years repairing pagers, then phones, then nothing, when the stores stopped letting anyone fix anything.

What they made was simple. You took an old phone, the kind people kept in kitchen drawers out of guilt, and you gave it one job. You stripped out everything but the board and the battery. You soldered two copper probes to it and a tiny solar panel. You flashed it with a program, eleven lines long, that read how wet the soil was between the probes and, once a day, sent a single number to the garden's steward. Then you buried it to the neck in a raised bed, so that only the panel showed, like a flower that had decided to look up.

There were four hundred of them in the ground by the end of the first year, in schoolyards and on balconies and along the fences of the community plots. People called them the phones. Graciela called them listeners.

She had a habit, during the soldering, of reading aloud from whatever she was reading that week. One autumn it was an old essay about Roman roads: how what made them matter wasn't that they were new, but that there were so many of them, built by so many hands, and that some still carried carts two thousand years later. Her students soldered and listened and didn't always follow. She didn't mind. She liked the idea of a road that outlived the reason it was built.

In the spring, one of the listeners in the schoolyard on Pleasant Valley began sending two numbers a day instead of one. The second number, Graciela realized after a week of puzzling, was tomorrow's.

Old phones, buried in the soil, learned to tell when it would rain.

It was right every time. She dug the phone up with a trowel, carefully, the way you'd lift a sleeping animal, and laid it on the long table under the buzzing lights, and scanned its board for its Life Story, the way you did with anything. The record said it had been manufactured in 2041. It was 2033. She looked at it for a long time, and then she buried it again, exactly where it had been, and told no one but the class, who were very young and believed her immediately.
