Langley and Eva emerged from the dense foliage, the city lights twinkling below like fallen stars. The air was thick with humidity and the scent of blooming epiphytes, but as they descended, a refreshing breeze enveloped them. This was the work of the Air Canopy—an advanced system providing neighborhood-scale outdoor air conditioning, ensuring comfort and dispersing pleasant, often floral, aromas throughout the vertical enclaves.
As they reached the ground, Langley activated his neural interface, sending a secure message to his contact within the city’s clandestine tech network. They needed a safe house and intel on The Gardener’s next move.
Eva leaned against a tree, still reeling from her ordeal. "Thank you, Langley," she whispered, her voice a mix of relief and residual fear. "I don’t know what they’ve done to me, but I can feel... something changing."
Langley nodded, his mind already racing through possible leads. "We need to get you to Dr. Crane. She’s an expert in bio-hybridization and might be able to reverse whatever The Gardener did."
Their destination was a hidden lab beneath Lady Bird Lake. As they navigated the treetop pathways, Langley marveled at the seamless integration of technology and nature. The Air Canopy’s vents, camouflaged among the foliage, emitted a cooling breeze, carrying the scent of lavender and eucalyptus. It was a stark contrast to the chaos and mystery they were unraveling.
They reached Dr. Crane’s lab, a subterranean sanctuary fortified against both prying eyes and invasive plant life. The doctor, a stern woman with silver hair and sharp eyes, wasted no time. "Eva, lie down here. Langley, I need you to monitor her vitals."
As Crane worked, Langley’s thoughts wandered back to The Gardener. What drove someone to manipulate the very essence of life? And how deep did this conspiracy run? His musings were interrupted by Crane’s voice.
"Langley, there’s something you need to see."
He approached the monitor, where a scan of Eva’s body revealed intricate, plant-like patterns interwoven with her human cells. "This isn’t just hybridization," Crane said, her voice tinged with awe and horror. "It’s a complete symbiosis. She’s becoming something... new."
Eva’s eyes fluttered open. "They’re connected, Langley. All of them. The plants, the people. The Gardener controls them through the Air Canopy."
Realization hit Langley like a cold wave. The system designed to provide comfort and clean air was being used to manipulate and control. The Air Canopy was the key to The Gardener’s power.
"We need to shut it down," Langley declared, determination hardening his voice. "If we can disrupt the Air Canopy, we might be able to break The Gardener’s hold."
Crane nodded. "It won’t be easy, but I’ll help. We need to act fast before Eva’s transformation is irreversible."
With a newfound purpose, Langley prepared to take on The Gardener and dismantle the sinister network hidden within the city's green façade. The battle for Austin's soul was just beginning, and Langley knew that the stakes had never been higher.

| Tradescantia pallida (0.00) | Tradescantia pallida is a species of spiderwort native to the Gulf Coast region of eastern Mexico. The cultivar T. pallida 'Purpurea' is commonly called purple secretia, purple-heart, or purple queen. Edward Palmer collected the type specimen near Ciudad Victoria, Tamaulipas in 1907. Tradescantia pallida is an evergreen perennial plant of scrambling stature. It is distinguished by elongated, pointed leaves - themselves glaucous green, sometimes fringed with red or purple - and bearing small, three-petaled flowers of white, pink or purple. Plants are top-killed by moderate frosts, but will often sprout back from roots. The cultivar T. pallida 'Purpurea' has purple leaves and pink flowers. Widely used as an ornamental plant in gardens and borders, as a ground cover, hanging plant, or - particularly in colder climates where it cannot survive the winter season - houseplant, it is propagated easily by cuttings (the stems are visibly segmented and roots will frequently grow from the joints). Numerous cultivars are available, of which 'Purpurea' with purple foliage has gained the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit.
Support this species by reading about it, sharing with others, and donating monthly or yearly to the ReLeaf Cooperative in honor of Tradescantia pallida. We deliver any quantity of these, for free, to any ReLeaf site (Free Little Library or other suggested location in the Shoal Creek, Waller Creek, and Fort Branch watersheds). We are currently seeking cooperative members in Austin and beyond to cultivate and provide Tradescantia pallida and other species for free to ReLeaf sites in their local watersheds.
