Pulp is a simple material that repurposes cardboard or paper into a lightweight, moisture-retaining filler. It provides structure, aeration, and water distribution in upcycled gardening systems.
Making Pulp
1. Soaking
Start with clean, uncoated cardboard or paper, free from glossy finishes or heavy ink. Tear it into large pieces and soak them in water using a bucket, basin, or tub. Depending on thickness, this can take anywhere from a few hours to overnight. The goal is to soften the fibers completely.
2. Shredding
Once fully saturated, break the material down further by hand or with a tool, shredding it into fine, fibrous pieces. The result should be a soft, airy pulp that holds moisture while remaining lightweight.
Using Pulp in a GrowBag
When placed around a rez, an upcycled bottle used as a reservoir in a grow bag, pulp helps retain and distribute moisture, ensuring water is evenly absorbed. It also creates a breathable filler that supports root growth and adds organic structure to the soil.
By transforming waste into a functional resource, pulp becomes an essential material for sustainable gardening.
