Bells
On Seventh the light poles are black with grackles, all of them starting up for the night at once. Lisa wheels the trike the last block.
A bell rings down the street. It is lower than hers and has a crack in it. That is the pharmacy on Chicon, Lisa says, and rings back. Then a bakery's cart rings, and then a florist's. Lisa takes her thumb off the bell and nods at it.
You ring. Down the street they answer in turn, and you can tell them apart. The last to answer is a bell with nobody near it, on a bike leaned against a fence.
- Go down to the bridge, where people are gathering for the bats.
- Follow Congress south until it ends in water.
