The Block of Doors
You walk up the avenue until you can no longer hear the water. A bus shelter with nobody in it, lit. A block of doors, a light over each.
At one, a path goes down to a creek where small lamps are floating. At another, a gate stands open on a house with the shutters closed. At a third, a shop with a radio in the window, hissing between two stations. At a fourth, on the sill, one silver cube. At the end of the block, a platform, and a train standing with its doors open. The clock over the platform reads 5:07 p.m. A conductor holds a door with one foot and looks from the clock to you. "Not yet," she says to the clock.
- Follow the path down to the floating lamps, into the dark under the oaks. (for now this door opens on Portland Head)
- Slip through the open gate. (for now this door opens on Two Halves)
- Walk into the shop with the radio. (for now this door opens on The Keeper Is Not In)
- Put a hand on the cube on the sill.
- Step onto the train, and let its doors close on your own kitchen.
- Stop under the clock over the platform. (for now this door opens on Both Shoes)
- Walk down the platform, past the train, to the far end.
- Sit down in the bus shelter.
