The Andrea Doria

July 25, 1956. Thick fog off Nantucket. She was bound for New York. The Stockholm was bound out. They each had radar. They each had a good captain. They saw each other too late.
The Doria was struck on the starboard side and listed so hard that half her lifeboats could not be launched. She sank on the twenty-sixth. Of her 1,706 people, 1,660 were rescued.
That is a good number. It is 46 short of a perfect one. The Log gives the 46 the same size type as the rest.
