Both Shoes

The man cuts through the rest of the runner and lets it fall onto the track. Huh, he says, and taps the half card standing in the flap with the shears. Leave that there till I find an eight, he says. Go home. It'll hold.

You go home along the block and in at the back gate, into your kitchen. You make the bed. You squeeze two oranges and drink the juice standing up. You water the plant in the window. You put on one shirt, and then the other shirt, and wear both. You find both shoes. The stove clock says 5:07.

Over the fence, a man next door stands at his grate with the tongs. He looks at the grate, and at you, and at the grate.
