Work Order
The set on the bench has its back off and a work order hanging from it on a string. In pencil: East of the highway, the house with the lens. Hears a man counting between stations. Stops at nineteen. Fades after dark. Gate sticks. Promised Friday. Please fix.
The three pairs of glasses lie across the chassis on their cord. A soldering iron sits hot in its stand, and the air smells of resin.
One joint on a tube socket is gray and grainy where the rest are bright.
The order says please fix. It does not say what.
- Touch the iron to the gray joint, and carry the set east to the house with the lens.
- Leave the joint as it is, switch the set on, and turn the dial slowly, past the heavy place.
