Farther Than a Door Is Thick

The paint is cool and a little gritty. Under your palm, very low, there is a note you have heard through a kitchen wall.

You knock on the door with one knuckle. Short, short, long.

Nothing. Then the knock comes back, from farther than a door is thick. Short, short, long.

Paloma does not take her hand away. Neither do you. Along the wall the servers go on running, and one fan changes its pitch and settles. The note under your palm does not change at all.

When you do take your hand away, the paint is warm.

the end, for now
