The Balcony
The balcony is iron, a long platform over Eleventh, with four small tables and a rail. The roofs go down in steps toward the water. A saw is running somewhere, and a long way off a siren, going somewhere else.
In the air by the rail a line of small slanted writing hangs: (someone will leave a coat over this rail and come back for it).
Below on the sidewalk a man stops in the middle of a step. He tilts his head toward the paving and holds still, his weight on one foot. Over his head the writing says: (he will not go down today).
After a while he sets the foot down and goes on.
the end, for now
