The Silent Room
You climb a stair you do not count. At the top there is a round room under the lamp, and in it there is no sound. Not quiet. No sound. Your footsteps arrive a moment after you do and are filed.
The Log lies open on the desk. The chair has a shape in it.
The sentences come up through the floor, the way heat does, and settle. Someone has read two and set them down square on the page, side by side, not touching.
You are the distance, said the hiker, in the voice of a person reading a sign. You are the way, said the bat, in no voice.
Someone has crossed out one name, and then written it back in.
The lamp turns over your head without a hum. Every sentence in the room is facing it.
- Turn the Log to the page for today. Found in the bin “Somewhere a person writes the whole sentence and sends it, and somewhere else it arrives in pieces.”
- Go back down the stair. Found in a drawer “It is possible to see the light and still hit the rock.”
