Behind the Tallest Stone
The tallest stone is an obelisk, taller than you, the name worn off its base. Someone has left a small jack-o'-lantern at its foot, the candle burned to a puddle. Behind the stone there is grass and the dark. Three bats cross the moon, and are gone. You wait.
Two gold points come up at the height of a cat. They stay three and a half seconds, and then they blink and are gone. At seventeen they come back.
The cat is not looking at you. He is looking at the air just behind your shoulder and a little above, about where a second head would be. You turn around and look where he is looking. The gate in the hedge stands open, with OAKWOOD on its plaque, and nobody is in it.
You keep looking. At eleven seconds a girl in a witch hat steps into the gate, holding a pillowcase.
- Go through the gate to the girl in the hat.
- Turn your back on the gate, and hold a note for the ghosts.
