Problem
An aluminum can used as a planter or vessel will trap excess water if the bottom remains sealed. Standing water can rot roots, breed insects, create odor, and make the container heavier than needed.
Solution
Create one or more holes in the bottom of the can to allow excess water to escape. Use a corkscrew, nail, awl, punch, drill, or similar tool suited to thin metal. Space holes so water can drain without weakening the base too much. Smooth or flatten any sharp metal around the punctures. If the container sits indoors, place it on a tray or secondary vessel to catch runoff.
