Hole Placement

Problem

Drainage holes that are placed poorly can cause water to pool, weaken the can, create unstable footing, or spill in unwanted ways. A hole may exist, yet the container still drains badly.

Solution

Place holes at the lowest points where water naturally gathers when the can is in its intended position. For upright planters, use the base near the center or evenly spaced around the lowest flat area. For angled or hanging uses, place holes where gravity will carry water during real use, not just when the can is empty on a table. Keep holes away from seams or thin damaged areas that may tear.
