The hinge is the spine

On the iPhone Duo, the Bestiary's book finally folds where the phone does.

Mechanical Bestiary · Redline · Waypoint · Candy Crawl

A foldable phone bends in exactly the place a book does. It took me too long to take that literally. Today the Bestiary stopped treating the Duo's hinge as a line down the middle of the screen. Now the pages lie flat on the two halves, and as you close the phone the pop-up folds down with it. Open it again and the insect stands back up.

Redline learned some patience too. It now turns the screen only after you've held a new angle for three seconds. Two seconds felt fine at a desk and terrible on a couch.

And one mistake worth admitting: I locked Waypoint to portrait to fix something small, and on an open Duo the whole game shrank to a strip between black bars. Undone, with a note to myself to try every fix on the Duo first.

Thanks

  • Paper that does something as the page opens is an old idea, beautifully kept alive by the Movable Book Society. David A. Carter's One Red Dot is a lovely example.
